Dental Insurance
As a courtesy, we file dental insurance on behalf of the patient. You must understand that dental benefits are not really insurance plans. Dental benefits are available through some employers to help employees met their dental needs. Your dental benefits are not determined by the insurance carrier but by the plan your employer negotiates with the insurance provider. That means every plan carried by an insurance company is different. These plans are identified by the group number. Dental benefits are based on a contract between your employer and the insurance company. A common misconception is that the insurance company dictates employee coverage; it’s actually the EMPLOYER who determines the benefit level offered to their employees. That means the amount an insurance plan reimburses is determined by how much your employer has paid towards dental benefits. Insurance companies have a UCR table (usual, customary and reasonable) which is the fee allowed by your plan for a particular service, classified by CDT codes. You should be able to obtain a UCR allowance table from your employer or the insurance company. Most plans have a deductible (typically ranging from $50 to $100) which the policy holder must pay before the insurance will make a payment. Each plan pays a specific percentage based on Preventative, Basic and Major. A yearly maximum amount is set for each member on the plan ranging from $500-$3000 - once you reach this maximum the insurance does not pay towards dental work until the policy renews. When the policy renews, the deductible has to be met again and the plan is reset to the yearly benefit maximum.
At our office more likely than not, our fees are within the UCR of insurance plans which means if you have a PPO policy you can still come to us and pay the same as if we were in network. Please call us so we can look into your policy, we want to help you understand your benefits.
